History: Grissom Air Reserve Base was established as Bunker Hill Naval Air Station in 1942. It was renamed in 1967 to honor Apollo 1 Astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom. From 1957 to 1970 the base served under the Strategic Air Command and was home to the Boeing B-47 and later the Convair B-58. The area where the autocross competitions take place is the former site of the alert pads for the bombers during the Cold War.
